Are all Swedes Vikings? Are all the Swedish women tall, beautiful and blonde? Do Swedes eat meatballs, smorgasbord and dance to Abba all day long?

    Two duvets or one

I was amazed when I started living here in Sweden, that I found most of my friends with 2 duvets on their bed, instead of one large one. They sleep together, but under 2 seperate duvets. I found it very perculiar indeed.

In South Africa you have 4 main sizes. Single, Double, Queen and King. When I decided to enquire here, most of the shops, IKEA included sells mostly single duvets and single covers. In South Africa when you grow up you do so on a single bed. Then you start studying and might move into your own apartment, plus your girlfriend might stay over every now and then, so you move up to a double or if you're lucky, a queen size bed. When you get married it's definitley a Queen, but possibly a King size bed. It's how it is... and matching size duvets to match the size of the bed.

I am 1,92m tall and I like to tuck in my feet and my shoulders a the same time when I go to bed. Like a mummy perhaps. How can I do that with a single duvet that's 1.80m in length. It doesn't work.

How can I hold my partner in the middle of the night and not have the cold air come in somewhere between the two single duvets?

Fortunately for me, my partner and I met in South Africa, and started our relationship under a King size duvet. 2,20m x 2,30m. That's plenty of duvet for tucking in all the parts, and holding and cuddling if you ask me. So when we moved to Sweden, we had to go and hunt for a King size duvet, because it's not a very popular size. And when you enquire about it you get this weird look of "what's wrong with you? can't you be luck everyone else and just sleep under a single duvet?" But we finally found one and now I am happy again, because I just couldn't fall asleep with my feet sticking out, no matter how hard I tried. And it's got nothing to do with being scared about the monsters under my bed.

I can imagine that it's never really cold indoors, so you don't really feel your parts outside the bed at night. We don't have central heating in South Africa, so it can get cold inside too, maybe that's why we all need to tuck ourselves in at night.

So I would like to know what the traditions are where you come from, but specifically why in Sweden they have 2 duvets?

    This is interesting actually!

Swedish single beds are 2.0 m by 0.9 m which is much longer than single beds sold here in Australia. I actually brought my single bed here, from Sweden. It's a Dux, which is really a great bed... anyway the quilt (duvet) cover I have is Norwegian but it's also 2.0 metres long... and i just checked the Swedish ikea and their påslakan (quilt covers) are 2.0 metres long. So Darryl that should be long enough for you, even at your majestic 1.92 metres. Cos you're not pulling it over your head are you? Don't, because we don't want our community's super poster to suffocate!

A question you didn't go into is whether a couple uses two single beds pushed together or a queen size or other larger bed. I'd like to hear from some 'real' Swedes on this topic.

But as for the quilt cover and whether the couple shares it or each person has their own, I have found it more common to have your own, with the thinking that each person can roll around, pull it up or down or whatever without disturbing the other person. Which is also probably the rationale behind the 2 single beds put together. It makes sense to me. Perhaps it's a bit less romantic but from a rational point of view it's sensible - and the swedes are a rational bunch, aren't they?

    Ayako *lol* Poor you!

You need to fight for your right!

I belive seperate duvets kills the love no matter the good intentions. ;)

No matter how you try to hide the gap between the bed it's still there. Just a hop and a skip away from seperate bedrooms! Well, exaggerated but still ;)

i think tommy is right... 2 duvets kill the mood... unless your relationship has reach that point where your bed is now only reserved for sleeping.

Okay... this is for Darryl and Tommy....  first of all LOVE can't be defined as "dead" or at the "end" because of separate DUVET... second... it is easy to talk when first thing in the morning you wake up and all the SINGLE duvet is on yourself and your mate is completely uncovered and freezing her A....  I would like to extend this forum to girlfriends.... the question would be "when you wake up... who has the duvet .... both of you.. only him... only you?" .... and yes bed should be a Peaceful place were to rest.... we were speaking about sleeping here right? I mean WHO NEEDS A DUVET TO KEEP WARM in other cases? :-)

my partner and me have no problem with stealing the whole duvet in the mornings... we have one that's 220mm X 230mm... it's huge... lots of space for more people... i mean if that's your thing and all.
