Our story :

Yes, like everyone on this site, I fell in love with Sweden and especially the north. Originally from Australia, I was living in Cambridge UK for 5 or 6 years where I met a Swedish gal. I'd been to Sweden before, but not Lapland. We decided to give up work to go and live in her family winter/summer cabin in the middle of nowhere ( about 40 km's south west of Tärnaby ) for 5 months. It was a life-style change and dream for me .... ice fishing, chopping firewood ... saunas and no neighbours !  During the winter the cabin had no running water and just your standard outside toilet with a hole under the toilet seat .... Yes luxury .. we had a seat ! And what a view from the window !

It changed my life ;) ( not just the toilet .. the whole experience ! ) Part of the 'deal' was for me then to take Lindy to my country, Australia. I hadn't been home for 6 years, so off we went. A year later I'd moved back to Lapland, bought an apartment in Tärnaby ( Tarnaby / Taernaby ) and was living the life .. and planning to start our business. The problem was, Lindy, after spending the majority of her life in Sweden ( Örnskoldsvik area ) would've prefered to have stayed in Australia ! Yep "  the grass is always greener .. "

So here we are.

Ironically, I moved here for the 'simple life' ... but have never worked so bloody hard !  We took our first holiday in 4.5 years in September 2008 and went back to Australia for 4 weeks. The break was very much needed . I was increasingly turning into Basil/ John Cleese from Fawlty Towers.  " Right then ! " and Lindy/ Sybil was threatening to leave me !

After a recent very sad loss in Lindy's family, we're now prioritising what's important in life by working less, and fighting to achieve that life balance that generally Swedes do so well. It's hard with your own business, but we'll keep trying.

Right then . Time to open the café and shout a little at our customers/guests !

  • Hej community-vänner, now I have come the long way from the Netherlands to Tärnaby. I'd like to see you folks "live and in colour" (can't stop thinking about Lindy's green spring-"bread" :) Now I am wondering if the Pub&Café is open week 34 och 35. I'll come along and check it out :) Vänliga hälsningar från grannbyn Tärnamo, Ruth

  • Cheers for getting back Tarnaby, I guess very busy now you have winter out the way, take care and good luck with all your challenges, chris

  • Hej matt ! nono... quite bored of this :) here everything is fine but tired of a "swedish mentality" ... and also evaluating other opportunity that life puts me on the way :) here works fine, nice nature, nice life... but always possible to make better and better. so, i will see ;) ....and you? what about you? i wish you a great season /regards/Ivan

  • Hi Matt & Lindy: thanks for your very kind offer! Unfortunately we're not going to be passing near Tärnaby on this trip. However, if we get very lost (perhaps chased by reindeer or the dreaded Mygg), we hope very much to end up near you. It's obviously a very beautiful place to live. Enviously yours, Alex & Olly

  • Hi Tarnaby, your profile story is just amazing, you gave up life in Australia for Lapland, the whole concept sounds totally life changing and invigorating, it sounds like you know where your priorities are and that you have your life well tracked. I think COS is just a great site, it links us al to such interesting folk like yourself. From a very unusally hot UK welcome and thank you so much for your friendship. Best wishes, Chris

  • I'd love to visit you guys. I'll be in Lappland in 2 weeks, and was thinking of dropping off from Kiruna by the beginning of August. However, I can see that it takes appx. 11 hours from Kiruna to Tärnaby!!! I'm still trying to figure out a shorter trip ;-)

  • Hello!!!!!! How are u? :)

  • hej!! nice to hear from you... yes, here everything is fine... a full booked summer is approaching :( too much. I have quite no more time for me, and when i have it... i go to fish to fill up stomac and freezer. I sew you video... :) i think you need more an ice-breaker instead a canoe ;) . Anyway, also here very bad weather all june long, and it don't seems to change. Have a great summer time with all your family and coustomares!!! /regards-Ivan
