Can you help me in my research?

Welcome to my page

I am a Brazilian journalist, descending from Swedish immigrants. And maybe you can help me in my next big project.

I'm planning to write a book including the story of the grandmother of my grandmother, Carolina Mathilda Ekman (born Olsson) who emigrated from Malmö to Brazil in 1891 and died in Malmö in 1909, when she went there to visit her family after her father died.

Until recently we didn't know too much about her story here in Brazil, but the Web helped me a lot finding the first clues. In September, due to a professional commitment, I was able to be the first one in the Brazilian side of the family to go back to Malmö to do some digging. (And I fell in love with the city.)

As a journalist, I am very interested in digging public information. With the help of Malmö's city archives, the city library and some old photographs and postcards my family kept, I was able to find out exactly where the grandmother of my grandmother lived her last days, in 1909.

I'm planning to go back someday, maybe this year or the next (let's see what the global crisis does), but maybe the users of this website can help me in my research, somehow.

* Did you have relatives in Malmö in the early 1900s?

* Did any of your old relatives emigrate to Brazil in the late 1800s?

Any kind of information you can help me with, be it about how the city was at that time or even a clue to what happened to Carolina's family in Sweden after she died, may be extremely useful.

And - who knows? - there is even the chance to find distant relatives here to have a coffee with next time I'm in Sweden.

If you think you can help me in my research, do get in touch. I'll be posting bits of what I already have about her story in the next months.

  • Hi Marcelo, yeah if you are ever in London again, I am only a couple of hours away on the South East, Sussex coast. Meantime, I wanted to ask you something about writing if I may. I want to write a book about an actual crime, where the case has been tried in england and the perpetrator has gone to jail and I want to fictionialize it. The case in question was a Mum in Yorkshire who knowlingly had her daughter abducted to get money from a national newspaper. My thoughts were that I could change all the names add new stories, maybe put something in about a greedy neighbour banker, topical here, but I a confused because in another case one of the major TV channels turned the case into a play, but kept the names all the same of the victims and even had the same media reporting, as they did through the case. My brothers and sisters have kind of put me down on this like they tend to with me being the youngest, but I thought that if I was to write something it would have to be topical and eye catching, because at 55 I am leaving it late to get anywhere. The case in question shocked the nation, she comes out of prison in 2012, a book was written at the time, by a reporter who followed the case and I was told by a book shop that it sold well, that was back in 2008. I have done a lot of research, have my ideas, but not the courage to put pen to paper, I got a degree at Uni so i can write, but based on what I am saying do you think I am wating my time, and please I don't mind you being brutally honest with me. Meantime take care and if you are able to help with my writing question that would be brill too, take care and best wishes, chris

  • Hi Marcelo and thanks for your friendship, I got interested in sweden a few years ago when I was at Uni because I liked the way the swedes get involved in the running of their country and this site has taught me so much about sweden and its glorious countryside and coastline. Malmo, I had in mind as a first visit, when i visit sweden next year, but I guess for you Malmo is that archive office, where you have been able to gather all that info for your ancestral search. I hope that goes well for you. Meantime take care and best wishes, chris

  • Hej! How is everything? Have not heard from you in a long time. You must be busy! Hope you are well.
