Welcome to my page
I am a Brazilian journalist, descending from Swedish immigrants. And maybe you can help me in my next big project.
I'm planning to write a book including the story of the grandmother of my grandmother, Carolina Mathilda Ekman (born Olsson) who emigrated from Malmö to Brazil in 1891 and died in Malmö in 1909, when she went there to visit her family after her father died.
Until recently we didn't know too much about her story here in Brazil, but the Web helped me a lot finding the first clues. In September, due to a professional commitment, I was able to be the first one in the Brazilian side of the family to go back to Malmö to do some digging. (And I fell in love with the city.)
As a journalist, I am very interested in digging public information. With the help of Malmö's city archives, the city library and some old photographs and postcards my family kept, I was able to find out exactly where the grandmother of my grandmother lived her last days, in 1909.
I'm planning to go back someday, maybe this year or the next (let's see what the global crisis does), but maybe the users of this website can help me in my research, somehow.
* Did you have relatives in Malmö in the early 1900s?
* Did any of your old relatives emigrate to Brazil in the late 1800s?
Any kind of information you can help me with, be it about how the city was at that time or even a clue to what happened to Carolina's family in Sweden after she died, may be extremely useful.
And - who knows? - there is even the chance to find distant relatives here to have a coffee with next time I'm in Sweden.
If you think you can help me in my research, do get in touch. I'll be posting bits of what I already have about her story in the next months.
