Welcome to my page

My wife has family who live in Sweden and we visit them 4 or 5 times a year. Her granddaughter is learning both English and Swedish and will soon be able to speak more Swedish than I can. We went to a great Scottish Swedish wedding in a folkhus a few years ago. All the Scots wore a kilt - and how the Swedish mosquitoes loved our legs!

Every week we go to Swedish lessons and slowly it is sinking in. I often find that the words are similar to the old Scots tongue. My idea of a perfect day is a walk in the woods followed by salmon and potatoes for a meal. I have travelled around southern Sweden a lot but never got further North than  Karlstad. Perhaps next year. Next time in Sweden for midsummer but with no surstomming - does anyone really like the stuff?

  • Hi there Alastair and many thanks for your friendship, I was in Scotland with a friend last August for several weeks on holiday, and visited right through to John O Groats, beautiful scenery and an enjoyable time, but unfortunately so much rain. It must be great to see so much of Sweden and interesting that you have mastered the swedish language, a lot of people have good intentions but find it hard. I fell in love with sweden after studies at Uni in Hull and I was particularly impressed by their sense of involvement in their own government. The swedish people appear genuinely interested in how their government works and manages their affairs. Since then I have found this site and now can't wait for my first visit which will be in summer 2011. Thanks again for your friendship and please keep in touch when you can, chris

  • HI how are u, nice page. i will wanna be your friend.

  • Hi Alastair, have you met Iain and Janet Patience? They made the move to Sweden a few years ago.

  • Hi Alastair, Another bridge? I hadn't heard. I'll br trapped between the two then. Skanske is an art, my next door neighbour who is from Stockholm takes great pains to correct me, and I can see why, it's nott eh most attractive accent. I'm in a farm country and there are people here who could be speaking martian for all I know. I am still battling with tenses, I am in a class of 6, me, an architect, a doctor and three research chemists. I always thought I was quite right but they know all the verb groups and can easily come up with imperfect past tenses. I dispair. Where are you moving to?

  • Hi, I saw your comment about buying a place n Sweden on Deana's page, obviously a great idea, but I just wanted to say well done for trying to learn Swedish. I was swayed by the 'all Swedes speak English' argument before we moved here, but some of the people I really want to speak to don't, and of course all the official letters are in Swedish, and some meetings I have to attend. A year later I'm at evening classes as well as working and I wish I had taken the time to learn more before we left England. You are right about the link between 'Scottish English' and Swedish, it is the only thing that gives me hope with irregular verbs...

  • Hi Alastair, I just stopped by to say that I love your smile and I hope you always have plenty to smile about. I and my family are all well and I hope you and your loved ones are well also. Have a great week!

  • (Message to all members) CommunityOfSweden.com has gotten it's biggest update so far: Groups! Anyone can create a group and other members can then join this group and discuss the group's subject and upload relevant photos. A group can be about a city, an activity, perhaps a swedish musician or something else. You decide! You'll find the new Groups section in the top navigation. Check it out and enjoy! :)
