I like it!

I hear this a lot from non swimmers but why ,I ask myself. You shower in water or take a bath, you know what water feels like. You drink water...you are made of water...and other minerals. It rains you get wet.My point is water is all around us and we cannot avoid it. I am trying to convince the non swimmer to swim or poor swimmer, there is nothing to be afraid of. To learn to swim, you need water and the will to swim. I would advise trying to learn in a supervised area, such as a public pool or private pool with one on one with the teacher.Learning to float is the first thing to do usually with a life jacket or float noodle. It took me 3 weeks (2 sessions a week) to learn to swim at a girls Y when I was 7 years old.Was I very good then? no I don't think so..I did the dog paddle which was very exhausting. But I  did swim in the deep end..a whole 7 feet deep!

I know swimming isn't for everybody but I ask you respect the water, not fear it. Swimming has kept me healthy for 47 years. When I was around 26 years old , I would swim 2 miles a day in a 40 foot indoor pool. That's a lot of laps. But this made me stronger for my snorkeling under water. I could hold my breath for 2.5 minutes under water. With the right equipment snorkeling can be a very good hobby as I have found out. My summers are taken up by diving 2-3 hours a day and on some days 5-9 hours with breaks to eat.

There is another world below the surface of the water, waiting for you to explore it.

  • Well, people seldom drown in the shower or in a bath. Water can kill. I once was on holiday with a group of young people in Ireland. one of the young man dived from a boat into the water. Because of the sudden change of body-temperature, his hart stoped, and local fishermen found him hours later. He was dead by then. He was a good swimer by the way. We all learn to swim, at school. Mostly it happens to the children of asylum-seekers that they drown. It takes time to convince them to learn to swim. But water is always something to be carefull with.
  • It's kinda strange for an Aquarian (that's me!) to fear the water..perhaps it's because i almost drowned in the sea before :(
  • Yes, Geof, I agree entirely ;)
  • Hej Geof,

In the Netherlands it's a big part of education, history and culture. Not such a strange thing if you know that our little country once was sea for 75%!! We lived on it, in it, loved it, fought it, tame it, try to conquer it, and now try to live with it's flow and movements because you'll never rule!! As toddlers the Dutch children often learn to swim here at quite an early stage in life. Mothers have swimming classes with their little babies. We have a lot of water activities over here such as swimming (champions as Inge de Bruin, Pieter van den Hogenband) sailing, kitesurfing, diving and of course in winter skating!! People in the Netherlands do spend a lot of time in and on the water. For me, I absolutely love the sea, the islands, and I wouldn't want to miss it. That's why I loved visiting Öland. It's a big version of our Waddenisland ' Terschelling' one of the Waddenislands we try to visit a least once a year.

There are three kinds of stories:
Travel: these are all about the holidays and travel memories. Recommendations: these could be about the best shopping places in Stockholm or the must see places in the Swedish Lapland. Anything: these can be stories about Swedish midsummer celebrations, food or thoughts in general.
