I like it!

What struck me most when I first visited Sweden was the Allemansrätt (the right to camp on someones property without prior permission). This willingness to share your property with a total stranger comprises both trust and communal spirit. And this is something you meet throughout Swedish society. The Swedish social system is aimed at solidarity: the schoolbus comes to collect children in the remotest villages and elderly are entitled free transport to a nearby town for shopping or social visits once a week. But the Swedish also feel a communal responsibility for the livability of their villages. In a local newspaper readers make compliments towards fellow citizens, volunteers and professionals. But they also criticize one another with the intention to improve the situation. The best example of communal spirit are the hembygdgårds: local gatherings of old buildings which are maintained by the villagers. They safeguard their local historical heritage without any help from the government. Renovations are done by volunteers, money is raised through selling coffee and vafflor during summer openings.

  • Nice article! The allemansrätt does not apply near buildings though. Neither on locations that may damage the property, should someone camp there.

  • hallo, Johanna.
ik wist helemaal niet dat je in Zweden wild kan kamperen. dat sterkt mijn vage plan om ooit in de zweedse bergen rond te trekken als een dartel geitje met een tent op haar rug.

There are three kinds of stories:
Travel: these are all about the holidays and travel memories. Recommendations: these could be about the best shopping places in Stockholm or the must see places in the Swedish Lapland. Anything: these can be stories about Swedish midsummer celebrations, food or thoughts in general.
