I like it!

After a 15 years of experience of hiking in the swedisch mountains we decided to go to Sarek.

I like to tell you something more of that beautiful national park.

Sarek is large and one needs at least one full week to hike through the area. We made 5 trips two in the autumn and three in the wintertime. I want to give you some general advice . You should consider carefullly the equipment you will carry with you.A good tent is essential on a hike through Sarek,we are using the Nallo Gt3 tent .this one is storm proof and easy to carry .You must have a warm sleeping -bag and extra warm clothing .In the wintertime at least 3 layers .Rainproof outer clothing is absolutely neccessary. You must also take a good campstove,we are using the triangia storm cooker.During the wintertime Sarek makes even more stringent demand. Many narrow valleys are subjected to avalanche which reach even the bottom of the valley.

Snowstorms are menacing and the lack of overnight cabins means that only highly experienced mountain specialist can frequent the area.Once we had a snowstorm and i couldn,t see my friend ,he was mabey 10 meters in front of me.Route selection, there are no hiking trails in Sarek , a beautiful part is the Rapa valley but hiking there is no Sunday stroll. The valley is covered in dense vegetation and even if one follows the well-wornpaths on the nord side the willow thickets are difficult to pass through, especially when it is raining. The path crosses over long stretches of marsh which are wet and muddy.  We where leaving there a lot of sweat . If you want a easier track i recommend to travel north of Skierfe and follow the valley,s nothern slope up to Alep Vasjajakkatj which can be followed downwards to Rapaselet. Many of Sarek,s streams and rivers are impossible to cross during high water periods.Even small easily-wadded streams can overflow their banks and create a strong current.Good starting points are Kvikkjokk- Parek ,Saltoluokta-Aktse and Ritsem-AkkaStugan.

When you want decide to hike in Sarek i wish you a lot of hiking pleasure it is marvelous we enjoyed it every time.

  • Jan, We never travelled by car , we were always taking planes, trains, busses. For sure you need special tires (studded tires), and start cables.
  • pure adventure! amazing pictures - esp. the one with sledge ... how difficult is it to travel around sweden in the winter? do you need wheel chains? or any special equipment in a car? (i suppose that you have alfa romeo - does it work there? ... just i little provoking ;)
thank you very much for replay! jan

Help

There are three kinds of stories:
Travel: these are all about the holidays and travel memories. Recommendations: these could be about the best shopping places in Stockholm or the must see places in the Swedish Lapland. Anything: these can be stories about Swedish midsummer celebrations, food or thoughts in general.
