I like it!

Sitting at my computer I started to wonder what everyone does at Easter time. I suppose some go to church, while others may spend time with their families. I also wonder what the weather is like where you are & if this is a factor on what activities take place. In my part of the world the weather is warm & sunny & allows for eating outside with a BBQ while the children play games with one another. Sometimes that adults join in the games with the children but soon have to retire as the young ones never seem to tire! Church plays an important role with Easter & as we nave many & varied denominations here the services are mainly all the same. We also have apublic holiday on Easter Monday which means that most business is closed with the exception of petrol stations etc & some amall shops. What happens where you live? Is it the same as here in South Australia?

The children spend time looking for chocolate Easter Eggs that the "Easter Bunny (Rabbit)" leaves around the house & garden for them to find. I am not sure how this tradition started but the children have a lot of fun in searching for the "eggs".

Our main meal during this time is mid-day on Easter Sunday & comprises of various meats, fish & vegetables.  The a dessert is served which is accompanied by beer & wines. Generally we all eat far too much & all vow to diet for the next few weeks, but we genarally fail in our attempts!

Unfortunately as a lot of people take the Easter break as a time to travel into the country for a short holiday a lot of rad accidents happen due to careless driving or tiredness when travelling long distances as we do in Australia. I hope that you all have a safe Easter & that we can talk again soon. Please let me know what happens with your Easter.

  • One thing my husband, Gord, and I never do is go anywhere on long week-ends or short holiday times for just the accident concerns that you mention. We sometimes celebrate holidays at slightly different times (Thanksgiving and Christmas) so that our sons and their families are not travelling on crowded roads.
  • My birthday is right around Easter and when I was young, I lived up in a mountain community with long, cold, snowy winters. I always changed from boots to shoes on my birthday. I declared spring. Easter was an indoor thing. My mother would seat us around the kitchen table the night before and she would prepare a simple dye mix, which we would then use to colour hard boiled eggs. We left the eggs in a bowl in the middle of the table for the Easter bunny to hide. On Easter morning, we would hunt for the eggs all around the living room. After breakfast, we sometimes took our trophies to show to, or exchange with our friends.
Dinner was usually a ham and vegetables. The ham bone was later used to make a delicious pea soup. I did the same with our children and they, with perhaps a blending of traditions with their wives, do pretty much the same.
  • We used to go to church when I was a child. When my grandmother died, I was six, things sort of fell apart. I think church eventually stopped being something my family did altogether. We always did the easter baskets filled with candy. Stores used to close on Sunday and this stopped a long time ago. Some stores are beginning to limit their hours or close completely on certain holidays. It seems like it would be nice to be more traditional but there are so many people from so many backgrounds I guess it is hard to limit business for people of different religions and cultures.
We used to eat ham, yams, nice rolls, green beans, carrots and then end with strawberry shortcake with fresh whipped cream.
I wish we had been more focused on the "reason for the season" or at least focused on something beside a day off! There don't seem to be so many accidents on Easter - New Year's Eve, the 4th of July seem to be the biggest.
Thanks for a great story and something to remember! I miss my grandmother's great traditional cooking!
  • Thanks for sharing what you and your family do on Easter. My family gets together on Easter Sunday for good food, wine and fun. We normally have an Easter egg hunt but this year we're supposed to be getting more snow even though spring is supposedly here! Before Easter we spend time dying and painting eggs and, of course, we eagerly await Easter morning to see what the Easter bunny brought us! We also eat too much and make the same diet vows! That must be an international thing! haha! Our Easter meal usually consists of lamb and salad and good home baked bread. We always have good wine! It's a good day, relaxing and a nice time to spend with family.
