I like it!

Today I left my wallet at home. You don´t realise until it happens how obstructed you get (and how much you shop in a day...).

In the afternoon, after a press meeting outside the office, I had to take a taxi with 2 boxes filled with printed guides and one, quite heavy paper bag. A trip with the underground was totally excepted. Just when everything was packed in the taxi, I remembered that I had no money or credit card at all. Well, I had 40 kronor borrowed from a colleague, but that does not get you very far.

"No worries", the taxi driver said, "it happens all the time. Let me just give you a note with my bank account number and you can pay me afterwards." So now I just did over the Internet - including a rather good tip.

I spoke to a friend from Holland tonight and she said "that only happens in Sweden!". Well, I don´t know, this taxi driver had a very positive focus and stated that trust and friendlyness is more important than money. But offering the same service many times before, he had only been defrauded once. I really, really hope it stays with that, too.  Is this particularly Swedish? What do you think?

He surely made my day, anyway!

  • Nice story! I'm sure it won't happen like this in Portugal... Great country! I'd like to try living on it...
  • Wow don't know if this would happen in Australia, the driver would probably take you home and wait for the money first. Great story!
  • I agree this is just the Scandinavian way. In Spain, maybe the taxi driver takes you home, but he would wait for you in your door waiting for his money. Meanwhile, imagine the taximeter... :s
  • That is the Scandinavian way - if this happened in Britain, you would be in trouble; either beaten up or police would be called! I am so glad that the cynicism and paranoia of life in Britain have not reached Sweden. This, apart from beautiful scenery, is why I look forward to my holiday.

There are three kinds of stories:
Travel: these are all about the holidays and travel memories. Recommendations: these could be about the best shopping places in Stockholm or the must see places in the Swedish Lapland. Anything: these can be stories about Swedish midsummer celebrations, food or thoughts in general.
